Subterranean Termites
Every year subterranean termites cause more damage than all natural disasters combined. These six-legged insects will eat anything cellulose, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
When inspecting for subterranean termites at a structure there are a few key elements an inspector looks for. One, any time these insects are out of the soil they will travel in self-built mud tubes/tunnels. These tubes keep them moist so they would not dry out. The tubes also act as a “highway system” due to the insect not having any eyes. You would never find subterranean termites just meandering around the ground. Another indicator of an infestation is wood damage. To make breaking the cellulose apart they will eat wood with the grain. Once a colony becomes three to five years old an annual swarm will happen. This is when they will come out of the ground in massive numbers in order to find a mate and head back in the soil to start a new colony.
