O’ Christmas Tree
It’s the time of the year when we are preparing our homes for the most wonderful time of the year, Christmas! There is nothing better than the smell of a freshly cut Christmas tree filling the house.
Bringing in a fresh tree can also bring in bugs. Christmas trees commonly have bugs called Aphids. These are little black bugs and brown bugs have six legs and wings. Another common insect in Christmas trees are bark beetles. These dark brown insects burrow themselves into tree trunks and can easily blend in. There could be up to 25,000 in just one Christmas tree!
Before you being your tree inside here are some things you can do to help eradicate bugs that may be hiding:
- Shake the tree.
- Leave the tree inside your garage for a few days before bringing it in the main living space.
- Examine the underside of the branches and trunk. If you see any branches with eggs, cut them off.
- Use a vacuum to suck up any bugs or eggs on or around the tree.
These insects are dependent on the tree...rarely are they a nuisance to people.
Enjoy your Christmas tree and the festivities surrounding it!
Merry Christmas!
