Are Camel Crickets Related to Camels?
Camel crickets get their name from the humpbacked appearance that is similar to a camel. This is where they get their names... they are not related to camels.
These insects are commonly called cave crickets or spider crickets. They are very common throughout the United States (and the world). Camel crickets can live for approximately two years. Unlike most crickets, they do not have wings and do not produce a “chirp sound.” Often customers will say, “They are jumping at me.” This jumping is a defense mechanism when they get scared.
Camel crickets are nocturnal and hide during the day. You can typically find them under logs, damp areas, in mulch, basements, crawl spaces, etc. For food, camel crickets consume wood, carpet, fungi, cardboard, other insects, and sometimes other camel crickets. During the winter they have the ability to live with minimal food.
Female camel crickets will lay their eggs in the spring in a dark, warm, and humid area. The eggs will hatch during April.
